IN a Facebook post, Anwar stated that the commitment was one of the key points discussed during his telephone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr earlier that day.
"Our discussion also touched on the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which remains a shared priority for regional stability," Anwar said.
The Prime Minister also shared promising developments in the ongoing border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be concluded on Thursday through a mutual agreement between the Defence Ministers of both nations at the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar noted that this development marks another step forward in realising ASEAN’s aspirations for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand’s Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with senior military officials and government representatives from both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting.
Thailand and Cambodia recently agreed to a ceasefire, which came into effect at midnight on 28 July, following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at Seri Perdana Complex, Putrajaya.
Separately, the Prime Minister called for a deeper appreciation of Asian history free from colonial narratives, citing Tipu Sultan of Mysore as a prime example.
He said the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his father, Haider Ali—figures who fiercely resisted British colonial expansion—underscore the need to understand history from the perspectives of regional leaders, not solely through Western records.
"Malaysian history, like many others, has long been written from the British perspective—that of the Western colonial powers," Anwar remarked during the launch of the *More Than A Day As A Tiger* exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.
"Although there are numerous academic works, including those by Edward Said on Orientalism, the broader disciplines of history, culture, and society are still largely framed by dominant Western viewpoints," he added.
Anwar further praised Tipu Sultan’s foresight in embracing military technology to counter colonial forces, highlighting Mysore’s use of advanced artillery and firearms that surprised British troops in early battles. - August 6, 2025
