A MAN believed to be the leader of a violent robbery gang targeting homes and business premises was shot dead during a police operation in Bukit Tunku, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday.
Acting Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) at Bukit Aman Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 36-year-old local suspect had 44 prior criminal records related to robbery, violent crime, drug offences and burglary.
“The suspect acted aggressively when police attempted to intercept the BMW he was driving for inspection,” said Fadil during a press conference at the scene. “He fired shots at officers, prompting return fire in self-defence.”
Also present was Sentul District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari.
Police revealed the suspect’s BMW bore false registration plates, with no record found in the Road Transport Department (JPJ) system. The vehicle is believed to have been smuggled into the country.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a police tactical vest, a revolver believed to have been used in the shootout, housebreaking tools, and narcotics.
Fadil said the gang had been active since last year, operating in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Perak, with losses from their crimes estimated at over RM1 million.
“The group, consisting of more than a dozen individuals, targeted private residences—particularly those with safes—stealing gold bars and cash. They are also believed to have impersonated police officers during the heists,” he said.
Investigators believe the gang is connected to a drug trafficking syndicate. Efforts are underway to track down the remaining suspects. - August 6, 2025
