Facebook page operator questioned as authorities warn against racial, religious and royal institution (3R) speculation disrupting investigation
THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating the circulation of alleged false and inflammatory content on social media related to the ongoing case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.
According to the commission, the material is suspected to contain elements classified under 3R — race, religion and royalty — and may pose a risk of public confusion, in addition to potentially undermining the ongoing investigation by authorities.
“To assist the investigation, the individual concerned was summoned for a statement recording at the Cheras District Police Headquarters on 9 August 2025,” the commission confirmed.
A mobile phone and a SIM card have been seized as part of the probe.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, a prison term of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC has urged the public to allow space for the authorities to carry out their investigation without interference and to be cautious of speculative or unverified online content.
