THE Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, is expected to rule on Monday following allegations that an opposition MP challenged a fellow parliamentarian to a physical altercation outside the chamber during a fractious debate.
“I have instructed all relevant parliamentary units, including those responsible for video and audio recordings, to gather evidence related to the incident,” said Johari.
“If there is proof of such conduct and an attempt to physically attack, I will take strict action. When physical actions are attempted, it crosses the red line. I do not want to accuse anyone, but I have ordered a full investigation, and a decision will be announced on Monday.”
The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday during a heated exchange on the 13th Malaysia Plan. Tensions flared when Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN–Pendang) accused the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) of failing to deliver aid, prompting a response from RSN Rayer (PH–Jelutong).
The debate quickly devolved into a shouting match after Awang allegedly referred to Rayer as a “kafir harbi” – a pejorative Islamic term for non-believers deemed hostile to Islam.
Shortly after, video clips widely shared online appeared to show Awang making gestures interpreted by many as an invitation to fight outside Parliament.
Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong later urged the Speaker to take decisive disciplinary action.
“It was broadcast worldwide — everyone saw what happened in the Dewan Rakyat. When we talk about bullying, it must be taken seriously,” said Khoo. “Yesterday, Pendang wanted to fight another MP. This is an example of behaviour that should never happen.” - August 14, 2025
