THE lawyer representing the family of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir has called on the public to ensure that upcoming solidarity gatherings remain free from political agendas, emphasising that the focus must stay firmly on seeking justice.
Speaking to reporters following the latest inquest mention at the Coroner’s Court in Kota Kinabalu, lawyer Hamid Ismail warned against turning the solidarity event into a platform for partisan messaging.
“This is not the place for politics. If there are those who wish to bring political motives, they should not attend. We are gathering for Zara, not for any political party,” he said.
His remarks came in response to criticism over recent solidarity events that were reportedly marred by political posturing, prompting backlash on social media.
Hamid also issued a strong caution to social media influencers and users who have allegedly intimidated witnesses or spread misinformation surrounding the circumstances of Zara’s death.
“There are student witnesses who are now reluctant to come forward due to online threats and harassment. I urge anyone with relevant information to approach the police or come directly to me. Influencers must stop intimidating witnesses,” he said.
He stressed that while the pursuit of justice was essential, it must not come at the expense of truth or personal safety.
“In seeking justice, let us not resort to slander or threats. We need to protect the integrity of the process.”
Hamid added that Zara’s mother was deeply moved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s public assurance that no one would be above the law in this case.
“I’ve spoken with Zara’s mother, and she’s extremely thankful. She appeals to witnesses, especially students, not to be afraid to come forward. If they’re not comfortable approaching the police, they can come to us.”
The Coroner’s Court has scheduled the inquest hearings to begin on 3 September, which will aim to determine the cause of Zara Qairina’s death. - August 18, 2025
