PROMINENT Sabah lawyer Datuk Ram Singh has categorically denied claims that he was politically influenced or improperly motivated in defending one of the five teenagers charged in connection with the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir.
In a strongly worded statement, Ram rejected what he described as "false, malicious and defamatory" insinuations circulating on social media, particularly in response to a photograph that sparked online speculation over his role in the high-profile case.
"I wish to state unequivocally and without any reservation that these allegations are entirely false, malicious in intent, and calculated to tarnish my professional standing," he said. "At no time have I received, requested or been influenced by any inducement from any political party or persons affiliated with them."
He added that he has never allowed improper considerations to cloud his judgement in any matter, especially one before the Children’s Court.
Ram Singh, who is representing one of the five teenagers charged under Section 507C(1) for insulting behaviour, confirmed to the media yesterday that he had taken on the case pro bono. His involvement has since drawn significant public scrutiny, with some netizens questioning his motives and suggesting undue influence.
The case has attracted national attention following the tragic death of Zara Qairina, who was found unconscious at her school on 16 July and pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.
Addressing the criticism directly, Ram stated, "As an officer of the court, I am bound to uphold justice without fear or favour. I have approached this case with the utmost diligence and care."
He called on the public to disregard what he described as baseless insinuations and warned that he would not hesitate to initiate legal action if defamatory content continued to spread.
"If these falsehoods persist, I will take all necessary legal measures to safeguard my name and professional integrity," he said.
Ram Singh has previously acted for numerous high-profile figures in Sabah and is widely regarded as one of the state’s most respected legal practitioners. - August 21, 2025
