A CAR crash involving six teenagers has claimed four lives and left two others critically injured after the 16-year-old driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel, police said on Saturday.
Kuala Langat District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi, confirmed that the red Toyota Corolla carrying the group had veered off course and crashed into a concrete barrier along Jalan Sultan Suleiman Shah at approximately 5am.
"Preliminary investigations indicate the driver, a 16-year-old boy, dozed off and lost control of the vehicle," he said in a statement. "Checks also revealed the teenager did not hold a valid driving licence."
The group was reportedly travelling from Pantai Morib towards Batu 9, Kebun Baru, Telok Panglima Garang when the incident occurred.
"The vehicle is believed to have gone into the opposite lane before skidding into a roadside ditch and striking a concrete wall," Mohd Akmalrizal added.
The impact killed the driver, the front-seat passenger, and two rear-seat passengers. Three died at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The remaining two passengers, who were seated in the back, sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Banting Hospital.
All victims were male teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19.
Police confirmed that next-of-kin have lodged formal reports and their statements have been taken to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
