KUALA LUMPUR – Three cleaning workers today died after inhaling toxic gas at a sewage treatment plant in Pantai Dalam here this afternoon.

According to Harian Metro, the 2.40pm incident also injured a worker from Bangladesh and two other individuals.

The dead included a Bangladeshi national.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Muhammad Ridhwan Kamarulzaman said all six workers were believed to be carrying out cleaning works in a tank at the time of the incident.

"However, they experienced breathing difficulties after inhaling fumes from the sewage plant," he was quoted as saying.

"Two victims from Bangladesh managed to save themselves by exiting the plant before the Fire (and Rescue) Department team arrived."

Ridhwan said upon arrival at the location, the department's Hazardous Material Unit Team (HAZMAT) from the Jalan Tun Razak station conducted air quality readings and ventilation procedures before carrying out rescue operations.

He added one of the victims was extracted from the area and taken to hospital while the bodies of the other victims were retrieved by the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA).
