SABAH is expected to see a major boost in skilled workforce development with the development of a RM130.6 million branch campus of the Malaysian Construction Academy (ABM) in Beringgis, Papar.
Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said the 34-acre campus will accommodate up to 700 trainees at a time, a 73% increase compared to ABM’s temporary site in Kota Kinabalu.
Training for construction personnel is also expected to rise by nearly 40%.
“Today we are opening a new chapter for Sabah. This campus will nurture skilled workers, polish young talents, and enhance their competitiveness in the job market,” Hajiji said at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The project is part of the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan, which prioritises human capital and infrastructure as economic growth drivers.
A state TVET Council set up in May is now coordinating over 160 training institutions in line with industry needs.
ABM Sabah and partner CIDB Tech have trained more than 7,000 people, with an employability rate of 85%.
Training demand remains strong in areas such as welding, scaffolding, gas pipe installation, machinery operation and electrical works — skills needed in both construction and the oil and gas sector.
The campus will feature drone technology, simulation systems and digital tools to prepare graduates for global market demands.
To secure employment pathways, ABM signed memorandums of understanding with the Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (SHAREDA), KTI Sdn Bhd and Tas Institute of Oil & Gas.
