A COASTAL road in Terengganu that was in the final stages of RM4.95 million repair works has collapsed again, forcing the authorities to close Jalan Pantai Batu Rakit to all traffic from Wednesday night.
The 15 to 20-metre collapse was detected by a police crime prevention patrol at approximately 9.30pm, according to Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor.
"An inspection confirmed the collapse of the road shoulder, but fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported," he said on Thursday.
The incident is believed to have been caused by erosion beneath the embankment structure. Notably, the weather was calm at the time, and there were no reports of high tide.
The Public Works Department (JKR) was alerted immediately and instructed to close the road in both directions pending further safety assessment.
“JKR, along with the appointed contractor, has been informed to carry out a full road closure until it is confirmed safe for use,” Azli added.
The affected road section forms part of the T145 coastal route between Mengabang Telipot and Batu Rakit, near Kampung Tanjung. Repair works were initially launched following a major 280-metre collapse in January caused by severe weather during the Northeast Monsoon.
The original repair project was scheduled for completion in October. This latest setback is expected to delay the timeline and has sparked concerns over the durability of existing coastal defences amid ongoing erosion risks. - September 25, 2025
