PENANG has produced 433 women entrepreneurs in the past six years whose average income rose by 30% annually, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Underlining the importance of women in leadership and business roles, Chow envisioned that Penang would become a state who can cater and meet the aspirations of all women.

“Our efforts continue through the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC), with flagship programmes such as PenMentor and Wanita Jana Rezeki. Over the past six years, PenMentor has mentored 433 women entrepreneurs," Chow said at the eighth anniversary dinner of the Penang Women Chamber of Commerce gathering at the new hospitality property - Fifth Avenue Hotel.

The Wanita Jana Rezeki continues to empower grassroots women leaders under the Women and Family Development Committees (JPWK), equipping them with the skills to develop community-based income projects and strengthen local economic resilience, said Chow.

“The achievements of women remind us that they are not merely participants in progress, but architects of it. When women thrive, families prosper. When women lead, communities flourish. Their leadership is central to our Penang2030 vision, and the state government remains steadfast in ensuring equitable access to education, funding, and leadership opportunities."

Chow congratulated the chamber for marking its eighth anniversary.

He said since its inception, it has evolved into a respected platforms for entrepreneurship.

Chamber president Koh Shu Juan reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to creating meaningful platforms for women to learn, collaborate, and grow.

She added that visibility matters because it brings opportunity, and opportunity brings growth.

“That’s why we must be seen, be heard, and lead by example. This year, we encouraged our members to step into the spotlight and share their stories because women can lead, women can shine, and it’s normal to be confident."

The chamber will also relaunch its online portal to make its interactive and to tap the growing e-commerce opportunities. - October 19, 2025.
