THE Nation’s mid-tier companies are emerging as a cornerstone of national economic resilience and global competitiveness, according to figures unveiled at the Mid-Tier Companies CEO Summit 2025 (MTC CEO Summit) today.
Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who officiated the summit, said the sector’s pivotal contribution to the economy.
“Although representing less than 1% of registered businesses, mid-tier companies contributed 40% to Malaysia’s GDP in 2023. They are not merely contributors but the economic shield of the nation in the face of global uncertainty.”
He said, it brought together government leaders and industry executives to review achievements and chart the future of Malaysia’s mid-tier sector.
In his keynote address, Tengku Zafrul also cited the Programme for the Development of Malaysia’s Mid-Tier Companies (PPSPP) as a driver of growth.
“The PPSPP recorded annual sales of RM39.5 billion in 2024, up 20% from 2023, with nearly 60% derived from exports. This proves the growing global competitiveness of Malaysia’s mid-tier firms.”
On employment and supply chain integration, Tengku Zafrul noted: “6,408 new jobs were created in 2024, with 68.5% classified as high-skilled positions.
“More than 11,000 local SMEs have been integrated into the SPP export supply chain, illustrating the multiplier effect of mid-tier success.”
He also praised international expansion and branding efforts, ststing: “In 2024, alumni PPSPP successfully entered 115 new international markets, spanning ASEAN, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, reflecting Malaysia’s preparedness on the global stage. Seventy-five per cent have implemented branding initiatives to enhance their global presence.”
He expressed that digitalisation and sustainability were central themes.
“Ninety-six per cent of SPP have integrated digitalisation into operations, and 99% have implemented energy efficiency and water conservation measures. These achievements demonstrate Malaysia’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and responsible economic development,” he added.
Tengku Zafrul reaffirmed the government’s commitment to mid-tier firms, saying: “MITI and MATRADE remain steadfast in strengthening strategic initiatives to ensure Malaysia becomes a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable regional economic leader.” - November 13, 2025
