THE traffic light junction at Permatang Pauh leading towards Ampang Jajar continues to serve as a hotspot for illegal motorcycle racing, defying repeated enforcement operations by the authorities.
A joint crackdown by the Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) and the Penang Police Contingent (IPK) last night, beginning at 11pm, still detected ongoing illegal racing activity in the area.
Deputy Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin, Deputy Director of JSPT (Enforcement/Traffic Control/Summons Management), said the riders appear undeterred by law enforcement.
"Operations like this are not new, and this place is familiar to them (street racers). Some have been caught two or three times before," he told reporters during the operation. "Yet they continue the same activity as if challenging the authorities and showing no regard for their own lives."
The crackdown saw 350 motorcyclists, aged between 15 and 35, and their vehicles taken to police stations for further inspection. More than 250 summonses were issued for various offences, with one rider receiving up to seven tickets.
"Most concerning is that even teenagers as young as 15 were involved, riding without licences and on motorcycles that fail to meet safety standards," Mohd Rozi said. "This highlights the urgent need for community awareness to help put an end to such dangerous activities."
He urged all road users to comply with traffic laws and regulations to protect their own safety and that of others. - November 16, 2025
