THE Kuala Lumpur High Court here today dismissed the appeal by Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son, Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin, to stay the bankruptcy proceedings against them.
The proceedings were initiated by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) after the two failed to settle their tax arrears amounting to RM1.69 billion and RM37.6 million respectively.
Judicial Commissioner Suhendran Sockanathan @ Saheran Abdullah dismissed the appeal after finding that he did not see any other harm that could justify the stay.
He also ordered the two to pay costs of RM7,000 each.
Najib maintains that the tax assessments are flawed and should not proceed while related matters are being litigated in other courts.
On June 25, 2019, the government, through IRB, filed the suit against Najib asking him to settle the unpaid tax with interest at five per cent, a year from the date of judgment, as well as costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
The government claimed that Najib had failed to pay his income tax from 2011 to 2017 within the stipulated 30-day period after assessment notices were issued by the IRB.
On October 16, 2023, the Federal Court ruled that the two must settle their outstanding taxes after dismissing their appeal to overturn the High Court's decision. - November 17, 2025
