A 21-YEAR-OLD student from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) tragically drowned today after slipping and being carried away by strong currents while enjoying recreational activities at Lata Sedim in Kulim, Kedah.
The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre received an emergency call at 9.29 a.m. via the MERS 999 hotline reporting that a male individual had gone missing in the river.
A rapid response team from the Kulim Hi-Tech Fire and Rescue Station, including one FRT B1-168 vehicle and a three-ton lorry with eight personnel, was dispatched to the site, approximately 24 kilometres from the station.
Operation Commander PBK II Marzuki Mohamed Nor said initial investigations revealed that the victim, Nor Aibil Hazimi Mansur, had been bathing in the river with three friends when the incident occurred.
“Realising the river’s strong currents, the fire department requested assistance from the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) of the Sungai Petani station to conduct a more thorough search,” he explained.
At 12.35 p.m., rescuers located Nor Aibil approximately one kilometre from where he was initially reported missing. Medical personnel from the Ministry of Health confirmed his death at the scene.
The body was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation. - November 24, 2025
