KUALA LUMPUR International Airport (KLIA) today commenced full implementation of its Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS), aiming to streamline traffic and reduce congestion at terminal drop-off and pick-up zones.
The move follows a three-month trial period which recorded a marked reduction in vehicles exceeding the 10-minute limit, from 50 per cent down to 21 per cent.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said today the trial successfully altered driver behaviour and demonstrated the need for full enforcement, particularly in anticipation of the year-end travel season and preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“Data from the trial period shows that congestion in the roadside areas improved when vehicles adhered to the 10-minute limit. Most KLIA users complied with the rule, and with full enforcement at Terminal 1 beginning today, we aim to ensure more orderly access so that everyone has an equal opportunity to use these lanes efficiently,” he said.
The VAMS system employs License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology to precisely record vehicle entry times and automatically calculate the duration of stay.
Drivers are allowed a 10-minute grace period, after which fines ranging from RM10 up to RM100 are imposed, depending on the overstay. Payments can be made via Touch ‘n Go, credit card, or MyDebit.
MAHB emphasised that the system is designed to maintain lane availability for passengers and ensure smooth terminal access.
For drivers who require longer waits, alternatives include Short-Term Parking with 15 minutes of free parking, Long-Term Parking with 30 minutes free, and the KLIA Public Waiting Area, a designated free waiting zone. - December 1, 2025
