KUALA LUMPUR – The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) should undergo major reshuffling following the “meat cartel” scandal as the agency is perceived as having failed to protect Muslims from tainted meat items, said the Malay Consultative Council (MPM).
MPM Performance Management & Delivery Unit Committee chairman Tun Hanif Omar said Jakim and the Veterinary Services Department should face serious action for their failures.
In a press conference today, he also urged the government to revive the Malaysia Halal Council while putting on hold the issuance of halal certificates.
He said the MPM will submit to the Conference of Rulers its recommendations, among them, to establish a special court for corruption and stiffer penalties to offenders.
Some of the penalties he brought up included stripping offenders of citizenship and banishment from the country.
Hanif, who is also a former inspector-general of police, said this problem is caused by widespread corruption, questionable halal certification process and the failure to revive the livestock industry. – The Vibes, December 29, 2020
