PAS President and Deputy Perikatan Nasional (PN) Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has urged the coalition to convene an emergency meeting of its Supreme Council to accept the resignation of PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and appoint a new leader, citing the need to maintain the coalition’s continuity. Muhyiddin’s resignation took effect on 1 January, following five years at the helm.
In a letter dated yesterday, Abdul Hadi called on PN leadership to act swiftly in line with Clause 8.3(l)(b) of the coalition’s constitution.
The letter, titled ‘Call for Emergency Meeting of PN Supreme Council’, was later shared on his social media.
"I, as President of PAS, have received Muhyiddin’s resignation letter as PN Chairman, dated 30 December 2025, which took effect on 1 January.
On behalf of PAS, we respect and accept the decision made by Muhyiddin and record our appreciation for his service and dedication in leading PN," Abdul Hadi said.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, he added, "It is hoped that this matter will be given attention and appropriate action taken," noting that more than ten days have passed since the resignation became effective.
Muhyiddin, also President of BERSATU and Pagoh MP, announced his departure after overseeing PN since the coalition’s registration on 7 August 2020. PN’s main parties include BERSATU, PAS, and GERAKAN.
The resignation has triggered speculation over potential successors, with Abdul Hadi himself and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Moktar among the names being discussed. Calls for PAS representation in the chairmanship have previously been voiced by party figures, including PAS Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.
Tensions between PAS and BERSATU have reportedly increased following recent political upheaval in Perlis, which saw PAS’s ADUN for Sanglang, Mohd Shukri Ramli, step down as Menteri Besar, further complicating the coalition’s internal dynamics. - January 11, 2026
