THE decision by UMNO Youth Chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, to resign as a member of the Melaka State Executive Council (Exco) is a personal decision and does not put pressure on the party to stop cooperation with the Unity Government.

UMNO President, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, stressed that the decision by the Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Exco was discussed first with the Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

"He (Dr Akmal) discussed the matter with me and Rauf. I respect his stance to resign as a Melaka Exco.

"Hopefully, this is his opportunity to step down to mobilise the Youth machinery," he said.

Previously, Muhamad Akmal, when delivering his policy speech as UMNO Youth Chief in conjunction with the UMNO 2025 General Assembly, explained that his decision to resign was made in the interest of the party due to grassroots voices demanding that the party no longer be together with DAP.

In fact, the Merlimau State Assemblyman (ADUN) stressed that the action was also based on responsibility, principles and dignity, besides warning that he would continue to fight those who spoke against him.

Commenting on the matter, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, announced that he would meet with Muhamad Akmal to obtain further clarification. – January 15, 2026
