THE Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has dismissed a proposal by Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah to reinstate three former party assemblymen as elected representatives, even if they continue as independents.
Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man described the matter as premature, noting that the next general election is still a considerable distance away and numerous uncertainties remain.
“This issue does not arise because the election is still a long way off. We have yet to know who the candidates will be or which seats will be contested,” the Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times last night.
Abu Bakar reportedly suggested the move in Utusan Malaysia, arguing that the three former assemblymen – Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Saad Seman (Chuping) – still hold a mandate to serve their constituents. He further indicated that reinstating them could help restore political stability in the state and protect public welfare.
However, PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari criticised the proposal, urging the Bersatu Kuala Perlis assemblyman to focus on governing the state and to refrain from intervening in the internal affairs of other political parties.
The three assemblymen were expelled from PAS on 24 December last year after they withdrew support from party colleague and then-Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli. Their respective constituencies were subsequently declared vacant. - January 26, 2026
