THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in Kedah has rearrested a freelance preacher and the head of the finance and accounts department of a state education and dakwah institution over alleged collusion in the misappropriation of funds estimated at RM1.3 million.
A three-day remand order until Sunday was issued against both suspects by Magistrate Nur Amalina Abd Rahman after an application by the commission at the Alor Setar Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.
According to a source, the two suspects, a man and a woman in their 30s, were rearrested at about 6pm on Thursday at the MACC Sungai Petani branch office to assist investigations into a separate case.
The source said the pair had earlier been remanded for one day following an application at the Sungai Petani Magistrates’ Court, before being released at 5pm on the same day.
“The two suspects, where the freelance preacher is also the managing director of the state education and dakwah institution, were remanded for a second time after being suspected of colluding to misappropriate about RM1.3 million that was deposited into his personal account.
“At the same time, investigations also found that both suspects approved payment for the purchase of a house valued at about RM500,000,” the source said.
On Thursday, both individuals were remanded to assist investigations after they were suspected of abusing their positions by approving payments totalling about RM600,000 for the purpose of fundraising for the education and dakwah institution without the consent of other business partners.
Meanwhile, Kedah MACC director Nazli Rasyid Sulong, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said investigations carried out by the Kedah MACC together with the commission’s Anti-Money Laundering division since October last year were being conducted under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
Earlier, Harian Metro reported that the Kedah MACC had remanded two individuals, including a freelance preacher, on suspicion of colluding to abuse their power by approving payments of about RM600,000 as an alleged reward for collecting funds for an education and dakwah institution.
A one-day remand order had previously been issued against both suspects by Magistrate Noorfazlina Musa following an application by the MACC at the Sungai Petani Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning. - February 6, 2026
