YANG di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir will not attend the Conference of Rulers meeting, with Istana Negeri Sembilan clarifying that he had not received an ‘invitation’ as earlier reported.

In a statement today, the palace said attendance at the Conference of Rulers did not require an invitation, disputing the reports that Tuanku Muhriz had been invited to the meeting, which begins tomorrow.

“Tuanku Muhriz had also not received a letter or royal invitation from the meeting’s chairman, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, inviting him to the pre-council meeting,” Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali, the Pengelola Bijaya Diraja, or Royal Household Comptroller, said in a statement.

The palace said the ruler had decided against attending the Conference of Rulers and would instead focus on state affairs, including the ceremony to install the Undang Luak Jelebu on Oct 14.

It also stressed that it had not previously issued any media statement on the matter.

The Straits Times had earlier reported that Tuanku Muhriz has been invited to attend the Conference of Rulers meeting from tomorrow till Oct 15.

The invitation was reportedly from Sultan Nazrin, who will chair the council

According to the reports, Tuanku Muhriz informed Sultan Nazrin that he will only attend the pre-council meeting on Oct 13.

The pre-council is not attended by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, so as to preserve the sanctity of state-level interests before meeting federal representatives, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a strongly worded statement recently, the DKU reaffirmed its position that Tuanku Muhriz remains the legitimate ruler and said the various documents issued by a rival group did not affect his constitutional position.

The DKU also rejected the suggestion that Negeri Sembilan has a collective or multiple Rulers comprising the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the Ruling Chiefs.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers has also said the state executive council had no constitutional authority to declare the ruler’s position vacant. – October 12, 2026
