POLICE in Kuala Lumpur have officially barred the Anti-Illegal Houses of Worship Movement (GARAH) from holding a planned rally in front of Sogo Shopping Complex this Saturday, citing concerns over public safety.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus explained that the decision followed comprehensive security assessments and consultations with various stakeholders.
“The police received a notification letter from the GARAH coordinator on 3 February regarding plans to hold a peaceful assembly at the location on 7 February at 8pm,” he said.
Subsequent security intelligence and feedback were gathered from all parties involved, including owners of businesses around the proposed rally site.
The Dang Wangi District Police Chief also held discussions with the organisers on 5 February.
Fadil noted that on 6 February, police received objections from owners of Sogo Shopping Complex, Pertama Complex, Harisons, and several nearby premises.
These concerns centred on the safety of shoppers visiting the area during the festive period.
“Intelligence information also indicated a potential risk of public disorder and threats to the community around the rally site.
The situation is expected to be more hazardous given the large number of people visiting the area for festive shopping,” he added.
Following a thorough assessment and security review, police concluded that the rally could endanger public safety.
“Therefore, the police have decided not to allow the organisers to proceed with this assembly,” Fadil said.
He urged the public not to attend the event and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to provoke chaos or compromise public safety.
“The police will ensure that the safety and wellbeing of the public remain a top priority,” he emphasised.
Local media had earlier reported that the rally, organised by GARAH in collaboration with 141 non-governmental organisations, was intended to highlight concerns over the proliferation of unauthorised houses of worship nationwide.
