THE government is proposing to extend the pre-tahfiz syllabus into primary schools to ensure continuity in Quranic education and prevent pupils from dropping out of Quran memorisation studies.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said such continuity is important to ensure that students who begin pre-tahfiz education at kindergarten level are able to continue their Quran memorisation journey when they enter primary school.
“I have already held discussions with the Minister of Education so that pre-tahfiz learning at KEMAS kindergartens can be continued when pupils enter primary school.
“We are making arrangements to ensure that Quran memorisation can be carried on from Year One to Year Six through a curriculum that will be coordinated by the Ministry of Education,” he said.
Zahid was speaking to reporters after attending the Al-Quran Al-Karim Huffaz Awards Ceremony at Maahad Tahfiz Almashrafe in Gombak today.
He said the proposal involves the implementation of additional Quran memorisation classes for Muslim pupils from Year One to Year Six, in line with the pre-tahfiz education received at Tabika and Tadika under the Community Development Department, or KEMAS.
Addressing concerns over the need for additional religious teachers, Ahmad Zahid said there would be no requirement for extra teaching staff at KEMAS kindergartens, as the syllabus is already in place.
However, he noted that the matter of staffing at the primary school level is still under the consideration of the Minister of Education.
He added that emphasis on mastery of the basic 3M skills, namely reading, writing and arithmetic, will continue to be a priority, alongside the provision of learning infrastructure such as smart televisions to support teaching and learning processes. - February 7, 2026
