KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia hit a grim new record of 2,525 Covid-19 cases on the last day of 2020, taking the national tally to 113,010.
The Health Ministry announced another eight fatalities, pushing up the death toll to 471.
It reported 1,481 new recoveries, making for a total of 88,941, or 78.7% of overall infections.
The previous highest number recorded for a single day was 2,335 on December 26 this year.
From the 2,525 cases today, Selangor recorded the highest number of infections at 1,205 cases.
The other states and territories were far behind, with Sabah having 299 cases, Malacca having 239, Kuala Lumpur 227, Johor 194, Penang 92, Negri Sembilan 78, Labuan 71, Kelantan 37, Perak 33, Kedah 24, Terengganu 17, Pahang 15, Putrajaya 5, and Sarawak 2, while Perlis recorded no new infections.
The Health Ministry also announced that eight Covid-19 patients have succumbed to the disease and passed away.
Additionally, 131 cases are currently being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), while 60 are on ventilators.
On clusters, the country detected five new ones today.
The Jalan Galah cluster was detected at a worksite in Klang, with 22 positive cases.
The Jalan Datuk cluster, which covers parts of the Titiwangsa, Kepong and Lembah Pantai, Klang and Hulu Langat districts, recorded 23 cases.
As for the Kampung Baharu cluster, which involves Johor Baru and Pontian, it saw 35 infections.
Meanwhile, the Pekeliling cluster, also from Johor Baru, found 27 cases through screening.
Finally, the Jalan Rasah cluster in Seremban found 17 cases. – The Vibes, December 31, 2020
