THE growing use of e-cigarettes, commonly known as “vapes,” among teenagers and school students is raising alarm over both health and enforcement challenges.
Department of Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) Acting Director Datuk Fisol Salleh warned that vaping has become so widespread that some devices are now treated as collectible items.
“The sale of vape devices and e-liquids, including through online platforms, gives teenagers easy access to them, even though sales to individuals under 18 years old are prohibited,” he said during a press conference at Bukit Aman on Monday.
Fisol highlighted the difficulty teachers face in detecting students carrying vapes to school, noting that the devices are small and easily concealed.
“This is what we are seeing now. Therefore, the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and local authorities (PBT) will work together on enforcement,” he said.
Beyond enforcement, he stressed the importance of educating youths about the potential long-term health risks of vaping.
“The dangers of e-cigarette use are also emphasised by MOH, especially for young people, particularly regarding e-liquids containing synthetic drugs,” he said.
Fisol urged a coordinated enforcement approach to curb the spread of vaping among teenagers and called on media outlets to highlight the associated risks.
“Cooperation between agencies and the community is crucial to addressing this issue,” he added. - February 16, 2026
