A 25-YEAR-OLD man believed to be linked to the burning of several copies of the Quran beside a football field in Taman Bandar Senawang in Seremban on Aug 22 has been arrested by police.
Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the suspect was arrested at a hotel in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, at 9.30pm yesterday.
“At 10.22am on Aug 22, the Seremban District Police Headquarters (IPD) received a call from a member of the public who reported seeing a small fire beside a football field in Taman Bandar Senawang.
“An inspection at the scene found that the fire involved several copies of the Quran,” he said in a statement today.
Alzafny said officers subsequently lodged a police report at the Operations Room, which served as the initial report on the incident.
He said police received another report at 5.45pm the same day concerning the theft of copies of the Quran from a mosque in the Forest Heights area in Seremban.
“Acting on information and the results of investigations, police raided a hotel in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit, at 9.30pm yesterday and arrested a 25-year-old man.
“An inspection of the room occupied by the suspect uncovered two suitcases and a backpack containing a total of 16 copies of the Quran.
“Police also seized three mobile phones and several personal belongings belonging to the suspect, including clothing, to assist in the investigation. Further checks found that the suspect had four previous criminal records and had only completed a police supervision order two months ago,” he said.
Alzafny said preliminary investigations found that all 16 copies of the Quran recovered from the suspect’s bags were believed to have been taken without permission from mosques and suraus in the Chow Kit area.
“Police also do not rule out the possibility that some of the copies were taken from a university in the northern part of the country, based on the discovery of ownership stamps belonging to the university,” he said.
He added that police also inspected the suspect’s family home in Senawang on the same day and found 36 Quran covers in the room where he lived.
“All the Quran covers were seized, and police believe the discovery is linked to the burning of the Quran beside the football field in Taman Bandar Senawang on Aug 22,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Sections 380 and 295 of the Penal Code. The suspect will be brought before the Seremban Magistrates’ Court for a remand application to facilitate further investigations.
