A 50-YEAR-OLD woman accused of stabbing her elderly mother in the neck with a can opener at a house in Kampung Segineh, Inas, Johol, has been remanded for seven days to assist police investigations.
Kuala Pilah District Police Chief Superintendent Mustafah Hussin said the remand order was issued by Tampin Magistrate Mohamad Redza Azhar Rezali and will run from February 21 to 27.
However, the process is being carried out at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah after doctors directed that the suspect be warded for further medical observation.
"The suspect has been instructed by doctors to remain warded for further examination due to her health condition, which is said to involve mental health issues, and she has also been found to have other medical problems.
“The suspect was arrested at about 8 pm last night at the house where the incident took place, and she had not gone anywhere," he told Sinar Harian on Saturday.
Police have yet to record a formal statement from the suspect, as her responses have been inconsistent and appeared to indicate hallucinations, Mustafah said.
The suspect, described as a single mother of two who lives separately from her children, is currently unemployed.
Police were informed that she had separated from her husband due to mental health issues.
The victim, an 80-year-old woman, remains in stable condition and is receiving treatment at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar in Seremban.
The incident occurred at approximately 7pm on Friday.
A neighbour recounted hearing repeated knocking and shouting shortly before the breaking of fast.
"I heard a male neighbour knocking repeatedly on the victim’s door and shouting for it to be opened as it was close to the time of breaking fast. I never imagined that the occupant had been seriously injured after being stabbed by her own daughter," said the resident, who declined to be named.
He said he did not initially suspect anything was wrong, as there had been no audible argument coming from the house.
"After that, I saw the male neighbour trying to calm the suspect while waiting for the police to arrive," he said.
The neighbour added that he knew the suspect and was shocked by the alleged attack, describing her as kind, helpful and soft-spoken.
"I knew that she was unwell before, but I thought she had recovered because she was no longer living here. I understand that only recently she moved back into the house to stay with her mother," he said.
Residents in the village expressed disbelief over the incident, as both mother and daughter were known within the community.
