PERIKATAN Nasional’s Supreme Council is set to convene tomorrow at PAS headquarters to decide on a new coalition chairman to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, with PAS reportedly submitting only one candidate and other member parties taking a cautious approach.
PAS youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, who also serves as Perikatan Nasional (PN) youth chief, said he understands that PAS has put forward only one name for the coalition’s top post.
The outcome of the Supreme Council meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, is expected to be announced soon after.
“From what I understand, there is only one candidate from PAS,” Afnan told Berita Harian.
He confirmed his attendance at the meeting, adding: “InsyaAllah, in the spirit of Ramadan, I expect the meeting to proceed harmoniously.”
Meanwhile, Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) president Punithan Paramsiven said selecting a new PN chairman is a complex issue that requires careful deliberation and broad agreement among coalition partners.
The party intends to adopt a wait‑and‑see stance until official nominations are made.
“We will wait until tomorrow. There is no official candidate yet for us to decide on. There must be consensus… we will see who is put forward first, then only make a decision,” Punithan said, noting that multiple factors must be examined in depth when choosing a coalition leader.
Punithan confirmed that all PN Supreme Council members are expected to attend the meeting to discuss the matter comprehensively, and that MIPP will also propose its own candidate.
“Yes, MIPP will propose a candidate tomorrow,” he said.
PAS president and PN deputy chairman Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang previously indicated that the council meeting would not only address the appointment of a new PN chairman but is also likely to consider the selection of a new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. - February 21, 2026
