A PROPOSED restructuring of Malaysia’s Matriculation Programme is expected to take centre stage in the Dewan Rakyat today, as Members of Parliament press the government on education reform, campus safety and the safeguarding of national heritage.
Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (Kuala Krai) is scheduled to question the Education Ministry on a proposal to transfer oversight of the Matriculation Programme to the Higher Education Ministry.
He is seeking clarification on whether such a move would reduce bureaucratic overlap, lower operational costs and preserve the quality of student admissions into public universities without affecting existing quotas.
Student welfare and safety at institutions of higher learning will also come under scrutiny.
Khairil Nizam Khirudin (Jerantut) is expected to ask the Higher Education Minister to provide statistics on fatal incidents involving students over the past five years and to outline the ministry’s short-, medium- and long-term strategies to strengthen campus safety measures.
Concerns over the preservation of Malaysia’s historical legacy are likewise set to be raised.
Wan Razali Wan Nor (Kuantan) will direct questions to the National Unity Minister regarding an alleged shortage of curatorial specialists, conservators and heritage researchers, which is said to be hampering efforts to protect national artefacts and historical documents.
Food security in the face of climate change and natural disasters will form another key line of inquiry.
Zakri Hassan (Kangar) plans to ask the Agriculture and Food Security Minister about strategies to ensure the resilience of Malaysia’s food supply during production disruptions caused by extreme weather or other crises.
Trade policy will also feature prominently. Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (Beruas) is set to seek clarification on government measures to address trade imbalances, particularly in relation to Thai fish exports entering Malaysia while Malaysian exports reportedly face restrictions.
The sitting is scheduled to conclude with the second reading of the Environmental Quality (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill 2026, setting the stage for further debate on environmental regulation and fiscal allocations. - February 25, 2026
