UNIVERSITI Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) has confirmed it is taking formal disciplinary measures against a student suspected of posting content deemed insulting to Islam, university authorities said.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Yatimah Alias stated that the action is being conducted in full compliance with the university’s legal framework and established procedures, with a thorough, transparent, and firm investigation underway.
“Following this incident, a complete investigation has been conducted, and disciplinary action will be carried out by the student disciplinary secretariat,” Dr Yatimah said in a Facebook post.
“UMPSA will not compromise on the dissemination of content that incites hatred related to religion, race and the royal institution (3R), which triggers racial tension and threatens public harmony.”
She added that UMPSA is home to a diverse community of students from various races, religions, and nationalities, all of whom are expected to uphold mutual respect.
“We strongly reject any form of insult or statement that could threaten religious and racial harmony. The 3R sentiments cannot be taken lightly, and every individual must observe boundaries and sensitivities that could provoke reactions online,” she said.
The disciplinary action follows a memorandum submitted by Pekan Umno Youth chief Mohd Fakhrul Akhmal Mohamed, urging decisive measures against the student.
The controversy arose from a social media post, circulated earlier this week on the platform Threads, which allegedly showed a UMPSA student stepping on the Quran.
Hours after the post went viral on February 25, the student’s father reportedly brought him to the district police station to file a report and offer an apology for the incident.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed that the police investigation has been completed and the case submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action.
Dr Yatimah emphasised that UMPSA regards the matter with utmost seriousness and will continue to fully cooperate with authorities.
“UMPSA will ensure a thorough, transparent and firm investigation into the student’s disrespectful actions,” she said, underscoring the university’s commitment to preserving religious and racial harmony within its community. - February 28, 2026
