A POLITICAL party reportedly set to be taken over by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was previously denied registration and has yet to submit a new application, according to Malaysia’s Registrar of Societies.
Registrar of Societies Malaysia director-general Datuk Mohd Zulfikar Ahmadconfirmed that Parti Keluarga Malaysia had attempted to register in 2022 but was rejected. No fresh submission has since been received.
“The party applied for registration in 2022 but it was rejected at that time and so far we have not received (any re-registration application),” he told BH.
Asked about the grounds for the rejection, Mohd Zulfikar said it was made under Section 7(3)(e) of the Societies Act 1966, which applies when an organisation fails to comply with the requirements set out in the First Schedule of the Act.
“The rejection was made because it did not fulfil the matters stated in the First Schedule of the Societies Act 1966, including clauses relating to party governance that must be clearly stated in the party constitution such as sources of finance, committee composition, methods of conducting annual general meetings and so on,” he said.
He added that any unregistered organisation, including political parties, may face action under the Societies Act 1966.
While individuals are free to join any duly registered and lawful political party, activities conducted under an unregistered body could attract legal consequences.
It is understood that 72 political parties are currently registered with the Registrar of Societies.
Under the Act, authorities may declare an unregistered organisation unlawful, order the immediate cessation of its activities and initiate legal proceedings against its office-bearers.
The clarification comes amid reports that Hamzah, a former deputy president of Bersatu, is seeking to assume leadership of Parti Keluarga Malaysia following his expulsion from the party on 13 February.
Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the MP for Tasek Gelugor who is said to be involved in negotiations with Hamzah over the proposed takeover, said the registration process was under way.
“I have been informed that the process is being set in motion and I have been told there are no problems or obstacles for us to join the party.
“If there are any issues (technical or registration-related), we will resolve them immediately,” he said.
The planned takeover was confirmed by the party’s founder, Khairi Jaya, who said efforts were being undertaken to pave the way for the Larut MP.
Earlier this week, Hamzah himself acknowledged that discussions had taken place regarding the possibility of him assuming control of Parti Keluarga Malaysia. - March 5, 2026
