MALAYSIA handed over a 28-year-old Bangladeshi national to the United States on Thursday following allegations of producing and possessing child pornography, authorities confirmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said the man had been transferred from Malaysia to Alaska to face prosecution in a federal court, ending a case that has drawn international attention.
FBI Director Kash Patel revealed on the social media platform X that the suspect, wanted since 2022, had been apprehended for operating an international child sexual exploitation network.
“As of last night, he has been transferred by FBI Anchorage from Malaysia back to the United States in Alaska and will face charges in court today. Further details will follow,” Patel stated.
The FBI expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government, particularly the Kuala Lumpur Legal Attaché, for their assistance in the investigation and detention of the suspect.
“Thank you to LEGAT Kuala Lumpur, the Government of Malaysia, and our local partners across the country who helped in this investigation and apprehension. Thanks also to FBI Anchorage for excellent work on this case,” Patel added.
The suspect, a former medical student at a private university in Kuala Lumpur, was initially charged in 2022 in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with producing and possessing child pornography.
He faces eight counts related to directing or producing pornographic images and videos of children using the Snapchat application under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years and a minimum of six strokes of the cane if convicted.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Alaska, the suspect appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kyle F Reardon in Alaska on his first court appearance after being charged in 2022 for operating an international child sexual exploitation network.
If convicted, he could face between 20 years and life imprisonment.
The case forms part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the rising tide of child sexual exploitation.
Court documents from July 2022 revealed the suspect allegedly abused and exploited hundreds of underage victims in Alaska and other locations both in the U.S. and abroad, using social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat to identify and coerce victims into producing sexually explicit and sadistic content.
The FBI and U.S. Department of Justice have collaborated with Malaysian authorities since September 2022, following charges in Malaysia related to possession and production of child pornography.
Prior to his extradition, the suspect had been residing and studying medicine in Malaysia. He was officially transferred to Alaska by the FBI on 4 March 2026.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi noted that the suspect’s abuse and exploitation extended to hundreds of victims worldwide.
“The transfer of a Bangladeshi national from Malaysia is another example of the success of this administration’s efforts in tracking down criminals hiding abroad,” she said.
Michael J Heyman, the U.S. Attorney for Alaska, described the case as the largest online child sexual exploitation case ever prosecuted in the United States, with significant international ramifications. - March 6, 2026
