PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the enduring importance of Quranic history, urging citizens not to view it lightly but rather as a vital guide for human development and for learning from past experiences to navigate contemporary challenges.
Speaking in conjunction with Nuzul Quran celebrations, Anwar noted that Ramadan is not merely about fasting, recitation of the Quran, or performing tarawih prayers, but also commemorates the momentous revelation of the Quran, a miracle with transformative power.
“Through it, societies in ignorance were transformed into the khayra ummah ("the best community" or "the best nation"), just as the generation of the companions became known as the generation of the Quran,” he wrote on Facebook.
The Prime Minister underlined that the Quran is not only about fulfilling the objectives of revelation in strengthening faith and honouring humanity but also records a mission of reform through the historical struggles of the prophets, serving as a moral and spiritual compass for the community.
“May we make the Quran our guide, strengthening faith, understanding life, and building a prosperous and civilised society,” he added.
In a related observation, Nur Hazwani Ab Rahman, coordinator of Rumah Ngaji in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, said that contemporary societal division and pressures can only be resolved when Muslims return the Quran to the central role in their lives.
“The Quran is not merely a book to be read; it must be applied to social systems, governance, and leadership,” she told Sinar Harian. “If everyone returns to what Allah commands and leaves what He forbids, we will not easily fall into division. Our centre of life must be Allah, not people or particular interests.”
Nur Hazwani also highlighted the annual World Quran Hour (WQH) programme, which this year focuses on Surah al-Muzzammil, emphasising the Quranic principle that human development must extend beyond individual growth to include social responsibility.
“Verse 20 of Surah al-Muzzammil calls not only for night prayers but also for the fulfilment of zakat and charitable giving. This demonstrates that development is not solely individual but involves social responsibility,” she explained.
She added that Surah al-Muzzammil was among the earliest revelations during the initial phase of the Prophet Muhammad’s mission, illustrating the immense challenges in conveying truth under pressure and opposition.
“During times of stress and resistance, Allah commanded the Prophet to strengthen his connection with Him through night prayers and Quranic recitation. Thus, we want society to understand that profound change begins with inner development,” she said.
The WQH climax event is scheduled for 11 March at Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Gombak, and will be simultaneously held across multiple Rumah Ngaji locations nationwide.
The event is expected to be attended by Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, as well as Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. - March 7, 2026
