ALLEGATIONS that Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin is poised to join UMNO have been dismissed by the minister as routine media speculation, highlighting how easily perceptions can be shaped in today’s highly connected news environment.
“Rumours are normal. In such a sophisticated media arena, those who spread them may be completely unknown to us. It isn’t the driver who makes the claim, but perhaps a passenger,” Hamzah said, responding to circulating reports.
He acknowledged that the story has gone viral, but emphasised that the only definitive source is the individual concerned. “It has become trending that I will join UMNO, but the proper question should be directed to the person themselves,” he added.
Using a maritime analogy, Hamzah described his political position as a large vessel that may require other ships for support.
“I have said, I am still in the car, but this car is not yet registered under any group. I registered it under myself and have not joined the fleet I mentioned earlier. When we speak of a fleet, does it mean I must become a UMNO member, or can I operate alongside UMNO? That is different. I want to clarify that there is no certainty about that,” he explained.
He added: “I can be on any ship; I do not necessarily need to be on the original ship. That is what I wish to convey. In the struggle, I can give orders to the fleet to continue fighting in the battle.”
When asked whether the analogy implied choosing between major parties such as UMNO or Perikatan Nasional, Hamzah did not confirm any specific alignment.
He stressed that interpretations are subjective, while his approach remains focused on flexibility in determining his political position.
