FIVE members of a family, including two children, were injured yesterday afternoon after their car veered off the road and plunged into a roadside drain in Kota Tinggi, Johor.
A spokesperson for the Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said the Kota Tinggi Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call about the incident at 2.07 pm.
The rescue operation was led by Senior Fire Officer II Azmi Sulaiman, accompanied by six firefighters. The vehicle involved was a grey Proton Persona that had lost control and entered the drain.
“The accident involved five victims, two of whom were trapped inside the vehicle, while three were extricated earlier with assistance from members of the public,” the spokesperson said.
Firefighters then carried out a rescue operation to free the remaining two trapped passengers. All five victims were subsequently handed over to the Ministry of Health for medical care.
“All victims, comprising three adults and two children – two boys and three girls – were transported to Kota Tinggi Hospital for further treatment,” the spokesperson added in a statement.
Meanwhile, a representative from Kota Tinggi District Police Headquarters confirmed that all the victims remain under medical care at the hospital.
“The incident occurred on a bend. The family was travelling from Mersing to Kota Tinggi. The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” the officer said.
This incident highlights the hazards of winding roads in the region, and authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly when navigating sharp bends. - March 18, 2026
