THE Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has called on the public to practise prudent use of electricity and water during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season, amid expectations of a significant surge in consumption.
In a statement dated 20 March, the ministry said energy and water usage typically rises during festive periods, particularly as households host gatherings and return to their hometowns.
Electricity demand among residential users is expected to increase by between 20 and 40 per cent compared with normal levels, driven by higher usage of lighting, cooling systems and household appliances.
To manage consumption, the public has been advised to adopt simple energy-saving measures, including switching off lights and electrical appliances when not in use, avoiding standby mode, setting air-conditioning temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, and using appliances with high energy-efficiency ratings.
Water usage is also projected to rise by between 30 and 35 per cent in states that typically receive a large influx of returning residents during the festive season.
Authorities said water supply operators are on standby to meet increased demand, with contingency plans in place to address any unexpected disruptions.
The ministry, through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), is targeting a daily per capita water usage rate of no more than 160 litres, in line with international benchmarks.
This target, it said, can be achieved through responsible practices such as repairing leaks promptly, using alternative water sources like rainwater for non-essential activities, practising moderation in usage, and ensuring taps are properly closed.
The public is also encouraged to reuse non-contaminated water, such as ablution water, for cleaning or watering plants, and to use water-efficient products with certified ratings, which could reduce household bills by up to 50 per cent.
PETRA emphasised that such measures not only lower utility costs but also contribute to more sustainable resource management nationwide.
In addition, the ministry highlighted the importance of electrical safety during the festive period, urging households to ensure proper wiring conditions, avoid overloading sockets, and use certified electrical products.
It also advised against using electrical appliances with wet hands, leaving devices switched on when away from home, hanging decorations on electricity poles, or using mobile phones while charging.
The ministry said these efforts align with the Malaysia MADANI framework, which prioritises public well-being, sustainability and responsible governance in managing national energy and water resources.
It added that efficient use of utilities would allow Malaysians to celebrate the festive season safely and comfortably, while supporting long-term national goals of resilience and sustainability in energy and water supply.
