PETROL and diesel prices across ASEAN have recorded significant increases following the global energy crisis stemming from geopolitical conflicts in West Asia.

Vietnam recorded among the highest increases when its government announced that the price of RON95 petrol would increase by 20 per cent to US$1.20 (about RM4.70) per litre starting this weekend, while diesel prices rose by almost 34 per cent to 33,420 dong (about RM5).

Regional countries such as Laos, Myanmar and Thailand have also faced fuel price increases, reported Berita Harian.

In fact, Laos was reportedly forced to shorten the school week to three days due to supply disruptions.

Meanwhile, in Myanmar, fuel prices at gas stations increased by about 30 per cent between Thursday and Friday.

The Indonesian government has assured that subsidised fuel prices will be maintained even though global oil prices currently exceed US$100 (about RM394) per barrel, reported the ANTARA news portal.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, thousands of jeepney drivers took to the streets to protest the sudden spike in diesel prices, which has affected their daily income.

In Malaysia, the retail price of RON95 petrol remains at RM1.99 per litre despite the pressure of rising global oil prices. – March 22, 2026
