KUALA LUMPUR – Just the second day into the new year, and Malaysia has again recorded more than 2,000 daily cases.
Today, the country logged 2,295 new cases and nine deaths.
This brings the cumulative cases to 117,373 and death toll to 483.
Recoveries are at 3,321, bringing the total to 94,492 discharged.
The Health Ministry announced that the nine victims were all Malaysians – two each from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Negri Sembilan, and one each from Kelantan, Perak, and Sabah.
Meanwhile, 125 patients remain in intensive care and 51 require ventilators.
Selangor still has the most daily cases at 640. However, Johor is seeing a surge with 580 cases, followed by Penang (288), Sabah (259), Kuala Lumpur (162), and Negri Sembilan (131).
States with less than 100 daily cases are Melaka (95), Kedah (47), Pahang (29), Kelantan (26), Terengganu (16), Perak (13), Putrajaya (12), Sarawak (5), and Labuan (1).
Perlis continues to record zero cases.
As of today, the country has a total of 523 clusters, with nine new ones and 229 still active.
The Harum cluster involves a worksite in Johor Baru with 206 cases.
Meanwhile, the Casuarina construction site cluster involving the Sepang and Petaling districts has 53 infections.
The Batu Lapan cluster, comprising cases in Tambunan, Ranau and Kota Belud in Sabah, recorded 52 infections.
From a worksite in Seremban, the Jalan BBN cluster detected 27 cases.
The Health Ministry also detected another worksite cluster in Johor Baru (Dewani cluster), with 25 infections.
The Renggam cluster, which has cases in Petaling, Sepang and Klang, recorded 20 cases after screening 1,000 individuals.
In Machang, Kelantan, the Belukar cluster recorded 17 infections while the Kolam Permai cluster involving Kuala Terengganu and Kemaman found nine cases.
Finally, the Mador cluster involving Meradong and Sibu in Sarawak recorded eight infections. – The Vibes, January 2, 2021
