PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that roadworks would commence soon on the proposed expansion of the Juru-Sungai Dua stretch of the North-South Plus expressway.

Upon completion, it is expected to alleviate traffic along the busiest roads here.

This is after the federal government approved the allocation for the project, said Chow in a statement.

Based on the information from the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), the project has now reached the implementation phase with physical roadworks due.

The full completion of the expansion exercise is by December, 2030.

The project is undertaken in phases to accommodate the continued use of the stretch, which is a key artery for mobility on the Prai mainland.

"We will liaise with the local authorities to ensure that the expansion drive is smooth. We are confident that upon completion, the road will become an important component in the dispersal system on the mainland."

The stretch handles up to 200,000 vehicles daily, and it is the main corridor to the northern and southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

It is also a gateway to the Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam and Prai localities.

LLM has undertaken a study of the traffic flow around the area, and the organisation is convinced that upgrading its lanes is suitable and timely. - April 16, 2026.
