KUALA LUMPUR – Amid a pandemic, Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is calling for a general election to be held as soon as possible.
“Why are we afraid of holding a general election during the pandemic? More than 30 countries have already done so.
“I think that we’re not really scared of Covid-19 but of other things,” he said during the launching of the Bagan Datuk division meeting today.
He said an election can be held with new standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place, apparently forgetting the impact of the Sabah polls in late September which caused an infection spike that the country is still recovering from.
He added that people want to see Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) head the government again.
“Umno and BN have a good track record and we governed the country the longest. Everyone in the country was well taken care of.
“GE15 must be held soon. We know that Covid-19 is still around but we can follow SOPs.”
Meanwhile, Zahid said Barisan Nasional will defend all parliamentary and state seats it won in 2018.
“That is our right. We will be contesting under the BN banner.”
Earlier Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Umno aims to contest in not less than 96 parliamentary seats in the next general election.
Mohamad said nothing has been decided, however, on whether Umno will continue working with Bersatu. – The Vibes, January 3, 2020
