THE appointment of former High Court judge Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman to lead the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to reinforce public trust in the institution, according to Senior Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Speaking to Bernama after attending a community programme at Kompleks Muhibbah in Kuala Luumpur on Sunday, Tengku Zafrul said Abdul Halim’s background in the judiciary would add significant value to efforts to strengthen the agency’s integrity.
“I welcome this appointment. He is a former judge and this will strengthen public confidence in the MACC,” he said.
Tengku Zafrul stressed that the key priority for the anti-graft body is to remain consistently perceived as independent, professional and credible in the eyes of the public.
He said the appointment of individuals with strong integrity credentials would help bolster confidence in anti-corruption efforts more broadly.
“For the people and also for me, what is important is that the MACC must continue to be seen as independent, continue to be seen as professional and with integrity, and I believe with the new leadership he will be viewed positively by the people,” he said.
The appointment of Abdul Halim was consented to by Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and he is set to assume the role of MACC chief commissioner on 13 May, succeeding Tan Sri Azam Baki, who is scheduled to complete his service on 12 May. - April 26, 2026
