POLITICAL analyst James Chai has arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya to provide his statement in connection with an ongoing investigation into a RM1.11 billion government-backed semiconductor project.
The former special officer on policy matters to former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli arrived at 9.59am in a white Proton Persona, dressed in a white shirt, and was accompanied by several individuals believed to be either family members or legal representatives.
Chai had been residing in London and was sought by the MACC since early March. The commission had earlier received a letter dated 9 March from his lawyers stating that he was unable to return for questioning due to travel costs and work commitments.
Following that, the MACC responded on 13 March granting an extension for him to appear by 31 March. However, he failed to do so.
The commission later issued a further directive requiring his attendance within two weeks, and indicated it was prepared to fund his return flight to Malaysia to facilitate the investigation.
At the time, MACC also said it would consider seeking international cooperation, including from INTERPOL or other foreign enforcement agencies, to secure his attendance if necessary.
According to investigators, 17 witnesses have so far been called to give statements, including officials from the Ministry of Economy and related agencies such as the Malaysian Investment Development Authority.
Meanwhile, law firm Kesavan Advocates & Solicitors, representing Chai, said in a statement that arrangements for his return were made following approval from his employer in London, and that they had been in communication with the MACC to facilitate the investigative process. - April 28, 2026
