THE United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has struck a balancing stance in Negeri Sembilan, backing continued support for the state’s unity government while acknowledging a loss of confidence among Barisan Nasional assemblymen in Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.
Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party respects the position taken by BN state assembly members, who have withdrawn their confidence in the chief minister, but stressed that support for the broader coalition government must continue in the interest of stability and public welfare.
He said UMNO’s leadership had received a comprehensive explanation from Negeri Sembilan liaison chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias regarding the move, which has been linked to concerns that Aminuddin had sidelined the state’s customary institutions and constitutional framework.
In response, UMNO is calling for an immediate joint meeting between its political bureau and that of Pakatan Harapan to resolve disputes touching on the core principles of each party.
“This is in line with Clause 5(c) of the Memorandum of Understanding in forming the Unity Government, which requires that all disputed policy matters be resolved through the Consultative Council,” he said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Dr Asyraf added that the party remains firmly guided by its constitution, particularly Clause 3.1, which upholds the Malay Rulers as the foundation of national sovereignty.
“UMNO views seriously the latest developments involving the crisis surrounding the Royal Institution and Adat (sustomary rights or tradition) in Negeri Sembilan, which has triggered significant polemics and serious misunderstandings among component parties forming the Unity Government in the state,” he said.
The position was reached following deliberations at an UMNO Political Bureau meeting held on Wednesday. - April 30, 2026
