THE force is investigating a viral confrontation involving a group of female students outside a school in Kuala Muda district after video recordings of the incident spread rapidly online.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the altercation is believed to have taken place on Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm and was allegedly triggered by a misunderstanding among students from the same school.
Speaking during a press conference at the Kuala Muda District Police Headquarters in Sungai Petani, Hanyan confirmed that authorities had opened an investigation paper following the emergence of the footage on social media platforms.
“Police are paying close attention to and monitoring social media content involving school students,” he said.
“A police report was lodged yesterday at 5.30pm by the officer in charge of the Bedong police station.”
He stressed that police viewed incidents involving school students seriously and urged the public not to speculate or circulate misleading claims that could interfere with the investigation.
“Police always take incidents involving school students seriously and advise the public not to make speculation that could disrupt investigations,” he said.
According to Hanyan, investigators have so far identified between six and 10 female students aged between 13 and 16 who are believed to have been involved in the confrontation.
A total of seven statements have already been recorded as part of the investigation under Section 160 of the Penal Code for fighting in public.
Police said preliminary findings indicated the incident did not involve elements of gangsterism or organised student violence, but instead stemmed from a dispute between students attending the same school.
Investigators also revealed that school authorities had earlier attempted to resolve tensions between the students before the situation escalated after classes ended.
Hanyan clarified that only two or three students were believed to have actively participated in the physical fight, while several others seen in the video were attempting to break up the confrontation, making the incident appear more serious than it actually was.
“Investigations also found that only several students sustained minor injuries such as bruises, and no weapons were used during the incident,” he said.
Police have urged anyone with additional information regarding the altercation to come forward and assist investigators by contacting the nearest police station.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the role of social media in magnifying school-related conflicts, particularly when videos involving minors circulate online before official investigations are completed. - May 15, 2026
