BARELY weeks after mourning the death of veteran broadcast journalist Karam Singh Walia, the Walia family has been dealt a second tragedy with the passing of his eldest daughter, Sharonjit Kaur Walia, on Wednesday morning.
Sharonjit, 44, died in her sleep at the family’s residence at D’Palma @ Taman Pinang Gading, Sikamat, at approximately 8.15am, according to her husband, Kashminder Singh Sandhu.
“My wife died in her sleep. Prior to this, she had not experienced any health problems,” he said when contacted by Bernama last night.
The death comes only 38 days after Karam Singh Walia, one of Malaysia’s most recognisable television journalists, died on 6 April.
Family members and friends gathered yesterday at the family residence to pay their final respects, while prayer ceremonies are scheduled to be held on 24 May at Gurdwara Sahib Seremban.
Kashminder described his late wife as a devoted educator who touched countless lives through her passion for teaching and unwavering belief in her students.
“She not only educated minds but also inspired her students, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to live on in every person she guided,” he said.
Sharonjit Kaur Walia served as a senior English lecturer in the Department of General Studies at Politeknik Port Dickson. She is survived by her husband and their two children, aged 10 and six.
The institution also paid tribute to the lecturer in a social media post shared on 13 May.
“Today, the entire Politeknik Premier Port Dickson community is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Mrs Sharonjit Kaur Karam Singh, a lecturer in the Department of General Studies.
“The entire institution extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased over this painful loss. Her contributions, dedication and the memories shared with her will forever remain etched in our hearts,” according to the Facebook post. - May 16, 2026
