KUALA TERENGGANU – Terengganu has recorded a total of 404 cases of dengue fever throughout last year, said state Health Department director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus.
She said it was a decrease of 25.5% (138 cases) compared to 542 cases in 2019 and that no death was recorded.
“Kuala Terengganu recorded the highest number of cases at 209 followed by Kuala Nerus with 72 cases, Kemaman (35), Dungun (26), Besut (25), Marang (19), Hulu Terengganu (13) and Setiu (five).
“There is a drop of cases in all districts compared to 2019 except for Kuala Nerus which shows an increase of 26.3% (15 cases). Throughout last year, a total of 25 episodes of the outbreak have occurred namely 18 in Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus (3), Hulu Terengganu (2), and each in Dungun and Kemaman,” she said in a statement today.
Dr Nor Azimi said flooding in the state poses the risk of increasing breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes in containers, puddles, and drains with stagnant water.
She said people in Terengganu are responsible for ensuring their homes and housing areas do not become Aedes breeding grounds after the floods.
She also urged them to spare 10 minutes of their time per week to seek out and destroy Aedes mosquito breeding sites (water storage containers) inside and outside of their respective homes and workplaces. – Bernama, January 4, 2021
