THE driver of a Mercedes-Benz, suspected of reckless and dangerous driving resulting in an accident that claimed the lives of four family members on Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam, Kluang, was remanded for two days at the Batu Pahat Magistrate's Court today.
The remand order on the 19-year-old suspect, who is also a student at a university in Singapore, was issued by Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno from today until tomorrow.
Police are investigating the incident under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a prison sentence of up to five years and a maximum fine of RM15,000 if convicted.
The 19-year-old suspect is believed to be the individual who drove dangerously with his 22-year-old brother, who was driving a BMW 530e, causing the accident at 1.15 pm yesterday.
Earlier, the suspect arrived at the court premises at 10.20 am before being taken to the chamber for a remand order.
There was a brief commotion when the suspect's lawyer prevented photographers from taking pictures of the man as he was being taken off the police truck.
In the incident, four members of a family, Semek Mat Soh, 73, his son and daughter-in-law, Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36, Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33, and Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10, died in the accident.
All of those who died were reported to be travelling from Melaka to return to Kota Tinggi.
The driver of the BMW was also killed in the incident.
Meanwhile, Kluang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, said the police asked the public with information regarding this accident to contact the nearest police station or the Kluang District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 07-7784222, 07-7766822 (hotline), 07-7784256 or 014-365682. – June 2, 2026
