THE Election Commission (EC) has not yet scheduled a meeting to determine key timelines for the Negeri Sembilan state election following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly, despite ongoing preparations for a separate session focused on the Johor state election.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun confirmed that the commission has received an official notification from Negeri Sembilan State Assembly Speaker Datuk MK Ibrahim Abd Rahman regarding the dissolution of the assembly, which took effect yesterday in accordance with Clause 56(2) of the Negeri Sembilan State Constitution 1959.
He noted that under Clause 56(4) of the state constitution, a state election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the assembly.
“Under Clause 56(4) of the Negeri Sembilan State Constitution 1959, an election must be held within 60 days from the date of the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.
“Therefore, a special meeting to discuss the date of the Negeri Sembilan state election will be held on a date to be announced later,” he said in a statement last night.
The announcement confirms that while the legal framework sets a clear deadline for the election, the formal scheduling of the EC’s deliberations on Negeri Sembilan’s poll timetable has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said in an earlier statement that a separate meeting regarding the Johor state election will proceed this Friday, chaired by Ramlan Harun.
He said the meeting will focus on key electoral milestones, including the issuance of the election writ, nomination day, polling day, the electoral roll to be used, and other logistical and administrative preparations.
The staggered scheduling reflects the Election Commission’s need to coordinate multiple state polls within a compressed timeframe, as Malaysia prepares for concurrent electoral processes in several states. - June 6, 2026
