Bersatu vows to remain in Perikatan Nasional after PAS ends political ties

BERSATU has pledged to remain a key component of Perikatan Nasional (PN) despite PAS formally ending its political cooperation with the party, a move that marks a significant shift within Malaysia’s opposition landscape.

Party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the party was saddened by PAS’ decision, stressing that the relationship between the two parties had been built on mutual understanding and shared principles.

“The decision to cease political cooperation and sever relations with Bersatu is the will of PAS.

“As a founding party of PN, Bersatu will continue to remain within PN and strengthen the core principles of its struggle,” he said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu would intensify efforts to advance the people-centred agenda championed by PN since the coalition’s formation.

At the same time, he reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting Malaysians who seek political change and leadership that reflects the aspirations of citizens from all backgrounds.

In light of the latest development, he urged party members and coalition supporters to remain focused on strengthening PN.

“Every level of leadership and membership must continue to place the interests of the people as the primary focus and be even more motivated in facing this latest challenge.

“I am confident that the people who support PN’s aspirations will remain steadfast alongside us.

“God willing, there is certainly wisdom behind what has happened. May Allah SWT grant us guidance, strength and His blessings,” said the former PN chairman.

PAS announced on Monday that it was officially terminating political cooperation with BERSATU with immediate effect.

The decision was reached during a Special Meeting of the PAS Central Working Committee after considering reports, studies and current assessments of the relationship between the two parties.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party had endorsed a resolution by the Syura Ulama Council meeting on 2 June, which reviewed the policy, legal and public-interest considerations surrounding PAS’ political cooperation based on the principle of Muslim unity.

The development raises fresh questions over the future configuration of Malaysia’s opposition bloc, although Bersatu has made clear that it intends to remain within PN and continue pursuing the coalition’s broader political objectives. - June 9, 2026
